Five Components
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Comprehension
3
Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in spoken words.
4
Teaching
Phonemic Awareness
  • Hear, identify and manipulate sounds and their letters
  • Teaching sounds along with the letters of the alphabet is important because it helps children to see how phonemic awareness relates to their reading and writing.

7
Teaching Phonics
  • Relationships between letters (written) and sounds (spoken)

9
Fluency
  • Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly.
  • Fluent readers recognize words and comprehend at the same time
10
Teaching Fluency
  • Students become more fluent readers (1) by watching/listening to models of fluent reading and (2) by repeatedly reading passages as teachers offer guidance.

Vocabulary Development
  • Vocabulary refers to the words we must know to communicate effectively. In general, vocabulary can be described as oral vocabulary (the words we use in speaking or recognize when listening) or reading vocabulary (the words we recognize or use in print).
13
Teaching Vocabulary
  • Read aloud, no matter what grade you teach.
  • Encourage students to read extensively on their own.
  • Teach both individual words and word learning strategies

15
Comprehension
  • Comprehension is the reason for reading. If readers can read the words but do not understand what they are reading, they are not really reading.
16
“There should be a little voice in your head like the storyteller is saying it. And if it’s not, then you just lookin’ at the words.”
  • High school student
17
Teaching Comprehension
  • Use specific strategies:
    • Graphic organizers
    • Questions (writing or answering)
    • Summarizing
  • Can be achieved through cooperative group work
